Do your kids go practically feral or turn into total couch potatoes in the summer? Make small changes to their routine now for an easier back-to-school experience.

Summer’s in full swing, but the first day of school is right around the corner! Starting early can make the back-to-school change smoother for everyone. Here’s how:

Go Step-by-Step

Be kind to yourself and your kids. Add a couple of small changes each week instead of changing everything at once. Many kids do better with slow, steady changes. Set them up for success in the classroom by focusing on these areas:

Sleep

Sleep habits easily go off track in the summer. Not getting enough sleep can lead to poor focus, grumpiness, and unnecessary drama. Experts agree that sleep is a good way to begin resetting a school-year schedule.

Start small. Put children to bed and wake them up 15 minutes earlier every few days until you reach a school-ready schedule.

Kids need plenty of sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends:

  • Ages 3鈥5: 10鈥13 hours
  • Ages 6鈥12: 9鈥12 hours
  • Ages 13鈥18: 8鈥10 hours

Help your child settle into a good night’s sleep with these simple bedtime habits:

  • Take a bath or shower.
  • Read a bedtime story together.
  • Put away screens at least 1 hour before bed.
  • Do a calming activity, like stretching or journaling.
  • Let them snuggle with a stuffed animal or favorite blanket.

Better sleep habits include limiting sugar and caffeine after lunchtime and making sure kids stay active during the day, so they’re tired when it’s time to sleep. Older kids need to be careful not to sleep in or nap too much, especially as the first day of school approaches.

Meals

Summer meals can be all over the place. Start bringing back a routine slowly.

School supplies

Preparing for school on a budget is hard. Cut costs by:

  • Go to a FREE Back-to-School event for giveaways, including free haircuts, backpacks, school supplies, or clothes.
  • Shop at second-hand or thrift stores for good deals on gently used items.
  • Make three lists:
    • “Must-haves” they need for class.
    • “Already-haves” you don’t need to buy.
    • “Want-to-haves” for when the budget allows.
Checkups and Vaccines

Before school starts, schedule your child鈥檚 yearly checkup (well-child visit). This visit helps ensure your child is healthy and ready to learn. The doctor will check their general health, growth, developmental goals, and give them any needed vaccines.

  • You can help calm your child’s nerves by talking about .
  • For younger kids, try a fun practice visit at home using a doll or stuffed animal.
  • Use a to prepare. A little prep can make the visit easier for everyone!
  • Write down any questions for you or your child to ask the doctor so you don’t forget to ask them.
Mental health matters!

Quieting anxiety and building confidence are so important, especially at a new school or after major life changes. Small actions you take can make a big difference in your child’s mental health, but remember that asking for professional help when they need it is sometimes necessary and a positive step.

  • For confidence: Remind your children of the things you admire about them or what other teachers or family members have complimented them on. You can also show them how to make daily affirmations (or say them together) to boost their self-esteem.
  • For anxiety: Starting or ending the day with a pep talk to remind your kid how awesome/smart/kind they are or sending them to school with a comfort item like a worry stone or bracelet can help.
  • For mental health or substance use support: 海角社区 First Members do not need a referral for mental health or substance use services. Check out our new, online to find out what services are covered and how to get help now.
  • For depression or suicidal ideation: Call 988, the national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Back-to-school stirs up excitement and nervousness, but with a little planning and a little luck, you and your kids can succeed and enjoy this special time. Future you will thank you later if you get started now!

Fight the Bite: Protect Your Family from the Mosquito Menace /blog/fight-the-bite-protect-your-family-from-the-mosquito-menace/ Thu, 25 Jun 2026 20:31:18 +0000 /?p=320067 Mosquitoes are the worst! Everybody hates them, and their bites are downright unpleasant. Here's how to fight back against the tiny terrors!

The post Fight the Bite: Protect Your Family from the Mosquito Menace first appeared on 海角社区.

    ]]>

Mosquito Magnets: Are you always the one to get bitten? Some people attract mosquitoes more than others due to factors out of our control, like blood type (some research shows mosquitoes prefer Type O) and the amount and balance of chemicals you emit from your body naturally when you sweat (creating a sweet perfume mosquitoes love).

Mosquito bites can infect people and animals with a variety of diseases, including malaria, West Nile virus, Zika, and chikungunya. In Texas, mosquito bites are usually not deadly, but they can still be dangerous and important to take seriously because they can make you sick, trigger allergic reactions, and lead to infections from scratching.

How to Prevent Mosquitoes from Breeding and Biting

The pleasant summer rains we’re getting in the San Antonio area this year are causing an unpleasant explosion of the mosquito population. Learning how to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and biting people or pets is vitally important. Here are ways to help fight the bite:

    The 4Ds:

Dusk and Dawn: Stay indoors or cover up during early morning and early evening hours, when mosquitoes are the most active.

Drain: Mosquitoes breed in still water! Drain any sources of standing water, especially after a rain from:

    • Flower/plant pots
    • Pet water bowls or bird baths
    • Fountains with still water
    • Kids’ toys
    • Old tires
    • Rain gutters
    • Open trash bins

Dress: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and long-sleeved clothing anytime you have to be outside. Spray clothing with insect repellent, because mosquitoes can and will bite through clothing.

Defend/DEET: Spray yourself and your children with an Environmental Protection Agency . DEET is the gold standard and is recommended for longer outdoor adventures, such as hiking or camping. Insect repellents with 20%-30% DEET can provide protection from mosquitoes and ticks for 4-8 hours. Find other EPA-registered insect repellents based on the protection level you need with the EPA .

Avoid using unregistered essential oils for mosquito bite prevention in general, but lemon eucalyptus oil can provide up to 6 hours of protection when formulated at 30%. Other effective ingredients to look for in insect repellent include CDC-recommended IR3535 and Picaridin. Citronella candles work only for a very limited time and within a very limited range, so use them only as a backup.

Natural Methods to Fight the Bite

You can defend your home from mosquitoes in other ways, too. Here are some helpful suggestions to reduce the mosquito population or keep them from getting into your home:

    • Fix any torn door or window screens.
    • Keep doors closed except for entering and leaving the house.
    • Use pesticide products, like mosquito dunks, that contain Bti (a bacteria found in soils) to kill off mosquito, black fly, and fungus gnat larvae. Btis are safe for people, birds, bees, fish, and pets, .
    • Longer-term solutions include planting gardens to attract bats, birds, lizards, frogs, and dragonflies, for example, that feed on mosquitoes. Here are some ways to attract beneficial creatures that eat mosquitoes or their larvae:
      • Plant flowers in your neighborhood that attract dragonflies, such as the common wildflower known as the Black-eyed Susan or yellow coneflower.
      • Hang nesting boxes or bird feeders in your yard to bring more birds around (and keep cats inside).
      • Hang a bat box on your patio or nearby trees to attract bats.
      • Build a to attract moths and other insects bats like to eat besides mosquitoes, and hang a bat house (you can buy one online or ).

    Protect Your Pets

Mosquitoes can cause skin allergies or, most importantly, heartworm in pets, so protecting them is very important. Most preventive steps you take to protect humans, such as getting rid of standing water and staying indoors during sunrise and sunset, help keep pets safe, too.

It’s also essential to keep your pets on year-round heartworm prevention to protect against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Do not use human mosquito repellent on animals. Talk to your vet about what protection is right for your pet.

We wish you a safe, fun, and mosquito-free summer!

Top Swim Safety Tips and the Signs of Drowning /blog/top-swim-safety-tips-and-the-signs-of-drowning/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 21:05:59 +0000 /?p=251717 Nothing beats the heat quite like a refreshing dip in the pool! Before you let your kids dive in, though, make note of these swim safety tips.

The post Top Swim Safety Tips and the Signs of Drowning first appeared on 海角社区.

      ]]>

Nothing beats the heat quite like a refreshing dip in the pool! Before you let your kids dive in, though, make note of these swim safety tips.

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental deaths for children aged 1-4, and the second leading cause for children 5+ years old. It is so important to keep your kids safe in and around water. If a child is missing, check the pool/water first. Seconds count and looking in the water first may save a life!

Here are some expert tips on preparing you and your kids for having a safe and fun summer!

      Swim Safety tips for Kids

#1: Always Watch Kids When They Are Swimming

      • Make sure there is an adult who can swim assigned to watch your children at all times.
      • Make sure they know they are responsible for watching the kids. Never assume; talk to them first.
      • Stay within arm’s reach of weak, inexperienced swimmers at all times, but also keep an eye on children who can swim well; things can change in a moment.
      • Avoid drinking alcohol when you’re supervising.
      • Stay off your cell phone as much as possible; you need to be alert and paying attention.
      • Take turns being the designated “water watcher” with another adult. This is especially important to discuss when your children go swimming with another family or friends.

#2: Sign up for Swim Lessons/Water Safety Courses

Professional swim lessons teach valuable water safety tips you may not think of, such as how to hold your breath, float, safely take off your clothes if you ever fall in, and signal for help. Even if your child has had swimming lessons before, it鈥檚 always a good idea to continue them until you feel they are fully confident and capable in the water.

      • San Antonio Parks and Recreation offers (schedule and registration coming soon) for ages 6 months to adult. Pool locations vary by session.
      • Take afrom the Red Cross and learn basic water safety, how to teach your children to swim, and tips for parents and other caregivers.
      • There are several fee-based swimming schools around San Antonio. Gyms like the YMCA also hold group and private lessons.
      • Take a through the National CPR Foundation (there is a small fee if you want to get certified).
      • Download the for iPhone or on Google Play from the app store or by texting “SWIM” to 90999.
      • Download the Swim app from the Red Cross, a fun way to learn how to be safer in and around water.

      # 3: Teach Your Child Water Safety Rules…and Follow Them Yourself

Whether it’s at the pool or the beach, rules help keep everyone safer. Some to follow and teach your kids include:

      • Never swim alone. Even older kids who can swim well should always have a “swim buddy.”
      • Do not ever dive into a body of water unless it is deep, clear water. Diving into shallow water or lakes and rivers can be extremely dangerous because there can be rocks or logs underneath the water.
      • Remind kids not to run around the swimming pool.
      • Never push another child into the water.
      • Always look for lifeguards or adults before getting into the water.
      • Never take glass containers into a swimming area.
      • Teach kids to NEVER go near pool drains.

If you have a swimming pool at your home or apartment, make sure there is a fence around the pool with a latch or a safety cover to keep unattended children and pets away from danger. Keep safety equipment near the pool, including lifejackets, a pole, and a first aid kit.

#4: Don’t Trust Recreational Floating Toys听

Young or inexperienced swimmers may feel more confident with floaties, water wings, or inner tubes, but be aware that these will NOT keep a child from drowning. Only a well-fitting, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket will provide protection from drowning. Check the label on the inside of the life jacket to find the U.S. Coast Guard approval number, which indicates it has been tested for performance. This approval number is on old and new life jacket labels.

      #5: Wear highly visible colors

You and any lifeguards always need to be able to see your children when they are in the water. Alive Solutions did in swimming pools and lakes. They discovered that neon colors, especially solid neon colors, were the safest. This is because people can see neon colors better in different bodies of water, from clear to darker water. They also tested how different patterns affect visibility and learned that darker patterns made the bathing suits harder to see, especially larger or busier dark patterns.

      Know the Signs of Drowning

When someone is drowning, the warning signs do not usually look or sound like what you see in the movies or on TV. A drowning person will rarely wave their hands in the air or scream to signal for help.听A drowning person’s survival instincts will kick in when they are in trouble, so before they go under, there may be some small signs to look for:

      • A person who is in trouble in the water may try to lean backward to keep their head out of the water.
      • A drowning child will become very quiet because they are using all of their energy to stay afloat.
      • They may have their head partially underwater with the water at their mouth level.
      • They may try to roll over onto their backs to float.
      • Their eyes may get bigger with a look of fear.

Watch this one-minute video from the Mayo Clinic, to learn the signs.

      Pride in Action! Our Commitment to LGBTQ+ Health & Advocacy /blog/pride-in-action-our-commitment-to-lgbtq-health-advocacy/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 16:54:03 +0000 /?p=319431

People who identify as LGBTQ+ often face barriers to health care due to stigma, discrimination, and past negative experiences. As a result, they are more likely to go without health insurance or needed care鈥攁nd experience worse health outcomes.

      Why Pride Month Matters

Celebrated each June, Pride Month honors the lives and contributions of LGBTQ+ people. It鈥檚 also a time to recognize ongoing challenges many in the community face, including higher rates of homelessness, unemployment, poor mental health, experiences of violence, and other health disparities.

      By the Numbers

A 2025 Trevor Project survey of over 16,000 LGBTQ+ young people (ages 13鈥24) highlights serious concerns:

      Suicidal Ideation

36% seriously considered suicide in the past year

      10% attempted suicide

59% experienced bullying, increasing the risk of self-harm

11%-19% more youth of color attempted suicide, most likely due to added racial or ethnic discrimination

      Anxiety & Depression

      62% reported recent anxiety symptoms

      47% reported recent depression symptoms

78% felt unsafe due to recent policy changes

      Access to Care

      84% wanted mental health care

44% who wanted it did not receive the care they needed

      Bullying vs. Supportive Environment

72% experienced negative treatment or name-calling

76% heard language that made them feel unsafe or unwelcome

21% were physically harmed or threatened.

Supportive environments reduced suicide risk by 1/3.

            Bruschetta

Tomatoes reach their peak ripeness in the summer in Texas. If you love tomatoes, this recipe will be a favorite! They make a great appetizer or dish to bring to a party. They are surprisingly easy to make.

            Ingredients:

            • 6-8 Roma or plum tomatoes*
            • 2 garlic cloves (wedges)
            • 1 bunch fresh basil
            • 2.5 tablespoons olive oil**
            • Balsamic vinegar
            • 1 teaspoon Parmesan cheese
            • 1 baguette, sliced into small, 1/2-inch-thick rounds or two large pieces of toast cut into 1-inch-wide toast fingers”
            • Salt and pepper to taste

            Supplies:

            • Mixing bowl
            • Cutting board and sharp knife

            Steps:

            1. Wash the tomatoes and basil.
            2. Dry the basil well.
            3. Dice tomatoes into small pieces and put them into mixing bowl.
            4. Stack basil leaves on top of each other in a nice pile and slice into thin pieces, called ribbons.
            5. Mince the garlic (cut it into tiny pieces).
            6. Carefully mix the basil, garlic, and olive oil in with the tomatoes.
            7. Season mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
            8. Let mixture chill in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours.***
            9. Put a spoonful of the mixture on each baguette or toast finger.
            10. Drizzle lightly with the balsamic vinegar.

*This is the best kind of tomato to use, because they have fewer seeds and are less watery.

**Extra virgin olive oil works best, but any flavorful oil will work.

***If you are going to keep the mixture in the refrigerator for longer than a few hours, wait and add the basil an hour or two before you serve it, so it stays fresh.

Shared Stories & Stronger Minds: How 海角社区 Heals Mental Health /blog/shared-stories-stronger-minds-how-community-heals-mental-health/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 17:18:10 +0000 /?p=318794 Break the silence and build hope in community! May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We're sharing ways to participate in or create a community, and why it can help us with our mental health. We're also encouraging everyone to speak openly about their mental health, because sharing our stories helps end the stigma of mental health issues.

“Stigma grows in silence. Healing begins in community.” This is the theme of Mental Health Awareness Month, May 2026.

Everyone experiences mental health challenges at some point in their lives. Some people may need a little help, and others need more intense or ongoing support. Taking care of our mental health has a big impact on our quality of life, how we feel, and how we function. Mental health affects our physical health, too. The two are closely connected. This month, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) encourages people to share their mental health stories and find ways to build or join communities as a source of healing.听

            Break the Silence

One way to help reduce the shame and guilt people may feel about asking for mental health support is to be open about the struggles we are facing. By sharing our stories, we can begin to normalize conversations about our mental health. Sharing our stories helps to build community, whether in person, online, or on the phone. These connections remind us that we are not alone. They can also help us manage stress and support healthy daily habits.听

            A Sense of Belonging

A community is a group of people with shared values, culture, goals, or interests. 海角社区 means being part of something bigger than ourselves. It can inspire us, empower us, support us, and help us take better care of our mental and physical health. 海角社区 provides a sense of belonging and purpose. Strong social connections can improve mood, lower stress, and build strength over time. Communities often offer chances to learn, move, help others, and feel connected. Opportunities and resources may also appear in communities.

            Building Your 海角社区

How can you become part of a community? You can start by looking for groups and activities that support connection and well-being:

            Volunteer

Spend time helping others, which can take the focus off yourself, increase purpose, and reduce stress.

            Workshops/Classes

Learning something new can keep your mind active and focused.

A woman demonstrates cooking outdoors under a green tent labeled "Marketplace" while an audience, mostly older women, watches seated nearby.
A group of diverse adults exercises outdoors on a sunny day with their arms raised, led by an instructor near a green canopy tent.

            Hobbies

Join or start a group that reads, hikes, or gardens, for example, as a shared interest.

            Local events, shows, or festivals

Many local events are free and bring people together to celebrate local culture or special interests.

Two smiling staff members in matching shirts offer promotional items to an older woman at a 海角社区 information booth decorated with colorful papel picado banners.
A group of adults plays volleyball on a sandy court enclosed by metal fencing under an overcast sky with power lines visible above the surrounding trees.

            Physical activity

Moving your body supports both mental and physical health. No matter your fitness level, you can get active. Look for an exercise class, join a gym, or start going around the block and greeting the neighbors you see.

            Faith-based

Many people find comfort in worshipping together, and most faith-based groups host other events, volunteer opportunities, and more.

You are not alone. Small steps matter. Showing up, checking in, and sharing honestly can improve mental health over time Being an active part of a community helps remind us that support is available.
